I was talking to a friend the other day who is a solo service provider. She's had a successful business but it's been up and down like it is for so many small businesses.
She finally got a website up last year and she told me she's frustrated because she hasn't gotten any leads from it. Her stats overall aren't very good. Few hits and not a lot of page views.
One problem is that her site is just there. She hasn't updated it since she finished it. It's not really keyword optimized. There isn't significant content or information on it. No one links to it.
Building a brand online takes alot of work, alot of dedication, and alot of patience.
Time is really precious so you've got to understand the role your online presence plays in your general marketing plan, then create a strategy, and implement it.
It's easy to become overwhelmed with all the other social media and networking tools available but not everything is going to be worth your while. Each tool you select will need to be cultivated over time in order to blossom into something powerful. It's also got to be the one that's going to help you connect with the target market you're trying to reach.
Blogs are awesome for the search engine power they give you. We haven't moved into other social media yet but we've discussed it. When we finally make the move, it'll be one that's right for us that we'll be able to maintain for the long haul and that will fit in with our overall business plan.
This is the time to be planning your marketing and media strategy for the coming year. What will you be doing to grow your brand and your brand's presence online?
