I'm in love with Netflix.
I worked my way through the last 3 years of school by working part time at the nation's largest privately owned chain of video clubs. It was a great place to work and a great job to have if you love movies.
One of the great things about working there wasn't just that we got paid to watch movies in the store (how cool is that?) but we got paid to TALK about movies. It seems that each of us had our favorite category of films so we were the resident experts in our category. We were expected to chat up the customers and be able to discuss all categories of movies but it was an added bonus if we had a favorite category.
That fabulous company made some mistakes and ended up getting swallowed by Blockbuster...sigh...
Going to our local video store (which unfortunately is a Blockbuster) is now like going to the grocery store. You go in...they either have what you want or they don't...no one talks to you...no one suggests an alternative movie...no one recommends a favorite...and certainly no one knows you.
We pay a fortune for cable every month so we have access to rotten movies.
In a moment of desperation I suggested we try Netflix.
Netflix has taken something that has truly "built a better mousetrap."
They've taken something that has become a commodity and put a unique spin on it.
There's even an element of social networking on there since you can recommend movies, comment, invite friends.
LOVE Netflix!!
How can you put a new spin on your market segment and prevent what you're doing from being a commodity?
